Candida Albicans Overgrowth
Ecology question having to do with types of symbiosis?
The yeast, Candida albicans is a part of the normal gut flora. The relationship is described as “commensal.” My question is, when conditions in the body change, say in immunocompromised individuals, and a fungal overgrowth occurs resulting in candidiasis, is the relationship then described as “parasitic.” How would you define the symbiosis of this organism?
This is an example of opportunistic parasitism.
