Testing For Candida
Gram stain: Few gram positive cocci seen. What does that mean?
I have been coughing for a year and I have done multiple phlegm tests.
Usually, Candida was found in my phlegm and my doctor said there is nothing to worry about as Candida Is usually found in phlegm.
But this time, they found this (above). I haven’t seen my doctor yet. What does few gram positive cocci means?
What infection can it cause?
a few probably doesn’t mean anything; it could be normal respiratory flora (bacteria that normally live in the mouth/airway).
Strep pneumonia and staph aureus are gram positive cocci, so it’s possible that there is an actual infection going on.
The gram stain is an initial test; the culture (which takes a few days) is more definitive. If nothing is growing, there’s probably nothing to worry about.
My guess is that the gram stain is a big fat nothing.
Assuming your chest Xray is normal, the three most common diagnoses for chronic cough is asthma, acid reflux, and post nasal drip, usually from allergies or sinus disease. Your doctor should be looking in those areas if your Xray is indeed normal.
